Hope listens as the history lesson winds down. She regards him with her brown eyes. "So if Dusk is more of a business enterprise, why is it so interested in protecting Detective Brannigan? And why recruit me instead of him?" She already believes that she knew the answer. She was the easier target of the two. She didn't live near her immediate family, didn't talk to them much, and she'd been on administrative leave, which meant she wouldn't be readily missed. A perfect target for Dusk, as well as for a serial killer. Worse yet, Dusk had used its influence to get her off of leave, causing her to be indebted to them. They had set the perfect trap, and she'd walked right into it. And yet, she felt…somehow honored that they had chosen her.
"The order exists in both worlds now Hope. The House of Dusk are concerned with the transient world of commerce and mortal lives, making money and using it both to further the Basarb family and to aid others. A worthy Tyrant understand the requirements of nobles Obleige and that the position requires them to protect those less fortunate or high born. The Order itself is still concerned with battling Evil. because the gift that we are given, the Blood of the Dragon, raises us above the common herd, we choose to shoulder the responsibilities that brings. Becoming a vampire, or even one such as us, there are two roads to take. The road of the monster who preys upon the world or the road of the Monster who fight to preserve it." he looked to the woodcut again. "You have certain qualities that make you a worthy candidate. fate took a hand to push you into our world and we'd rather you joined our side than wound up mad or dead or, Dragon forbid, working for the other side. Brannigan, Brannigan is a good man but not suitable as a member of the order. Right now we both have to Trust our Lords on that one."
A thought rises to the surface. The raid. Hope looks to the silver chalice, now hidden again under its cloth. "We found a similiar cup on a raid I'd gone on right before the...incident. It contained what we believed was...blood and poppy seeds. So...are they...were they working for a vampire?" Was that what that...thing she'd killed had been after?
"Most assuredly!" He answered firmly. "For an unknown elelment so far. A wildcard in the Jyhad .. that is the war . It has many poetic Euphamisms, NachtKrieg, Jyhad, war of ages ... excetera. The Vampires who had control of that Gang, the place you raided, they are new to Gotham. Perhaps making a play for power here. All we know is that they have some religious and cult practices that can be traced back to Southern or Central America. They may truly follow that faith, or use it as a masque and a tool. Intelligence is somewhat thin on the ground."
[A long tag for a longer one]
