  “Pray, tell me, what is your line of work...or interest, Colonel Buford?  You have worked together before, you say?”
   
  Buford thought a moment before replying.  “Unfortunately my dear, this is one secret that should remain so, at least for the time being.”  His low drawl managed to impart the comfort that his appearance could not.  “Suffice to say, Mr. Ashlar knew people who wanted to work, and I knew people who needed work done.”
   
  With that, he turned to Ashlar.  “Speaking of work, have you had the chance to hear Mr. St Clair’s songbird yet?  From what he tells me, she sings quite exquisitely.”
