"After tonights generous event Lady Simclair, I am sure Melcom will be only too happy to give something back. We all have to dog that tax somehow huh Allen?" he asked with a nudge.
Bradley glanced from Lady Sinclair to Mr. Fresserei. Generosity really shouldnt be motivated by a bottom-line tax credit, he said, allowing his gaze to take in the group assembled around him. Those with means have been giving to those without long before the tax code made exemptions for them. He became more animated as he warmed to the subject. Im sure that we can agree that each of us here makes more money in a year than most people will ever see in their entire lives. If life throws us a curve ball, we have adequate means to solve the problem, even if it means throwing money at it until it goes away.
But what of those who are living hand-to-mouth, barely scraping by and praying that nothing bad happens to them before their next paycheck? How are children expected to cope when their parents are killed in a traffic accident- Bradley paused, looking at Mr. Fresserei. -or when a wifes medical bills wipe out her familys savings and puts them so far into debt that theyll never be able to repay it? He looked at each person in the little group in turn, seeming to speak to each one individually. We have a duty to help others to help themselves, to give the poor and disenfranchised a chance to pick themselves up and get on with their lives.
Bradley stopped, letting his words sink in, the fire that animated his impassioned speech reduced to a low smolder. He thought back to the conversation with Michael Torres earlier that night, and turned to Lady Sinclair. Of course, the holiday season tends to bring out the best in people. In fact, I believe that the children at Gotham Memorial in need will be very happy with our donation this year.
