Most people realized they were in Darktown by two things. First, the
streets and the scenery became even more squallid and desolate than in
Lowrentsville, if this was possible. Heaps of garbage lay around,
sometimes even cluttering the smaller side streets. The city cleaners
found their way only occassionally into Darktown and this was evident.
Run-down tenements bordered the streets, most buildings had seen their
last renovation ages ago, the paint had faded to be replaced by
countless graffitis and some buildings looked like they were on the edge
of collapse. Several buildings were marred by bullet holes, that no one
had bothered to close again. The shops in the streets mostly had closed
down by now, heavy shutters preventing the common looter to enter,
leaving the picture of castles preparing for a siege. Police cars were
completely absent. Here, no cop dared to patrol the streets.
Second, you know you were in Darktown, when you failed to see anyone
sporting a fair skin in the streets. The white population had abandoned
the ghetto a long time ago and now anyone with whiter skin than light
brown did so at their own peril. The people on the streets were of two
kinds. The ones who tried to get home as soon as possible and hastened
along or the gang members lounging around the street corners eyeing
every stranger with deep suspicion. Checking out if the strangers were
predator or prey. Usually they were the latter.
Those being on the streets tonight could feel a sense of uneasiness and
tension in the hood. The gangs seemed to be strung up and ready to
break. Anyone they didn't know was watched with undisguised wariness and
malice.
In that environment, Tellos, being a white guy on a shiny bike with a
sword strapped to his back, stood out like a bonfire in the loneliness
of the Scottish highlands. It seemed like a thousand eyes were watching
the crazy white guy with his sword, who had the guts to drive into the
ghetto at night. It was probably thanks to this complete astonishment
that he hadn't been bothered by anyone, yet.

[Tags - If you drive further south and enter the quartier hatienne, I
will throw in another post, as there the whole atmosphere is slightly
different]
