> Shelli, Selena, Abby, John Black, and Matt, Ariñe

> Two mortals, a Bastet, two men with several, Pooka

> lifetimes between them

> Raindog's

>

> John reached into his pocket and pulled out a small

> statue of a crow. It was made of wood and was a deep

> black. Close examination of it showed an image of an

> eye had been carved into the chest. "I'll send Bob

> here ahead. He can scount things out for us, though a

> tux might not be a bad idea."

>

> He glanced around the bar and noticed the women who

> had just entered. "Dates might be a good idea too. I

> don't know where Felicia is, and I'm pretty sure

> Babe's going to be occupied. How about them?"

>

> He indicated the girls and called their waitress over.

> "My dear, would you be so kind as to put the ladies

> drinks on our tab?" He handed the woman a 50. "And

> keep the change."

>

> The girls are chattering away, obviously having a blast. While the Barkeep
> is pouring and serving them their drink the waitress approaches him and
> whispers to him.

> “Ladies, if you like your drinks are on the Gent over there.” He nodded
> towards the guy with the gent in the sharkskin suit guy.

> “If they’re buying I’m flyin!” Obviously, Selena had NOT been trying to
> keep a clear head at all.

> They all turned and smiled at the two men.

> Abbey looked them over, curiosity piqued by the mismatched pair. One
> casually relaxed, the other way over the top.

> Cool Suit tho.

> “Hey, thanks for the drinks! Who do we thank? I’m Shelli, the little one is<
> I style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal"> Selena an’ this here quiet one is
> Abby.” Shelli was never shy and the Crown brought out her West Texas drawl.

As all of this was going on Ariñe came out and slipped over to Raindog.

"Anything in particular you want to hear tonight?"

She said that warm and familiar smile.

After Raindog's answered she walks over to Booker who's masterfully playing
away on the piano. she had a bit of that Jessica Rabbit aesthetic tonight. The
satin bias gown fit closely to her hips. The copper color of the 1930's dress
softly glimmered about her bringing out the breath of sun so naturally locked
in her skin even more. Some of her hair was losely pulled back with yet
another vintage clip and those signature, dark ringlets fell around her shoulders,
with just the right amount of makeup, enough to accentuate and nothing more.
She carried her violin in its case in one hand and put the other around Booker,
a kiss on the check and,

"Gimme 'Don't Let Me Be Missunderstood', Ms. Simone"

She set her case down leaving the instrument inside for the time being. From
the moment she took the stage as it were it was hers. There was no question of
that but at the same time she was always good about making sure no one forgot
about Booker. How could they though? There was also no question that she
could sing. She had a precense that went far beyond her enchanting figure. She was
somehow approachable and yet unattanable all at once. She began the song with
her head down letting the music overtake her.

"Baby you understand me now

If sometimes you see I’m mad

Doncha know that no one alive can always be an"

her head rises looking straight out into the crowd.

"angel?"

Again the music over came the moment. Wonderfully flying in and then,

"When everything goes wrong you see some bad

Well I’m just a soul whose intentions are good

Oh lord, please don’t let me be misunderstood"

She was playing with phrasing, with the timing of the song as was her usual
way. She'd never perform the same song in the exact same way if she could help
it. The last line was short but not staccato. It wasn't held out like a lot
would expect. Instead she let Booker take it away once more. She was, as always,
a performer so she allowed the music to move her, to tell her what to do and
where to go and the music was right.

"Ya know sometimes baby I’m so carefree

With a joy that’s hard to hide

Then sometimes it seems again that all I have is worry

And then you burn to see my other side"

Another pause this one short for Booker to play with.

"But I’m just a soul whose intentions are good

Oh lord, please don’t let me be misunderstood"

This time she drew out that line, holding the last word, the last note,
letting it slowly slip away into the air turned sualtry by her voice.

"If I seem edgy

I want you to know

I never meant to take it out on you

Life has it’s problems

And I get more than my share

But that’s me

one thing I never mean to do

Cos I love you

Oh baby

I’m just human"

the last line she says with a devilish smile, of course only a few of the
people there that night would get the full meaning of that line. Booker plays on
agian this time for longer than the other brakes, allowing him to create.

"Sometimes I find myself alone regretting

Some little fooling thing

Some simple thing that I’ve done"

She shrugs and fakes innocense.

"I’m just a soul whose intentions are good

Oh lord, please don’t let me be misunderstood

I try so hard

So don’t let me be misunderstood"

With the last lines she drives the song right back to the soul of the woman,
the original Nina Simone. Of course she doesn't try to imitate her but instead
Ariñe honors her.
