Christine smiles distractedly and longs for a cigarette.

"Sure," she says. "Listen, I'll meet you outside the Temple in maybe  
15 minutes?" Christine peels her attention away from the dress and  
hopes she has done the right thing. Christine recalls, suddenly,   
that Aurora is also Bastet, the Scarab's partner in heroic rescues  
and this makes her feel less guilty. The silver clad superhero can  
surely hold her own against a couple of vampire escorts and whatever  
else awaits them at the Sinclair soiree. Actually, should be worrying  
about myself, thinks Christine slipping out of Aurora's room and  
along the corridor to her own. Because when Mara sees I'm bringing a  
friend, she may well rip my head clean off and reverse over what's left.

It occurs to Christine on the way to her room that she doesn't have  
anything to wear to the party and she is stunned by her own idiocy.  
The little black dress she is used to having around for the few  
swanky soirees she has been dragged to, she left in the wardrobe of  
the Holiday Inn yesterday. She'd needed to travel light and she had  
left a bunch of things she could see no immediate use for. Some Seer!  
Peachy keen, Christine.

"Oh . . ." Christine runs both hands through her unruly hair. No way  
she can send Aurora off on her own in that spooky goddamn dress to  
face the music on her own with Mara, pissed and dangerous. But short  
of turning up in jeans and sneakers, she has no idea what else to  
do.  " . . . . fuck."
