 From your friendly neighborhood Mage ST...

A mage doesn't actually need any Prime magic to take in quintessence from a
node, just meditate for one our at the node and you get a number of quint
equal to your avatar rating. Prime 1 allows the mage to store more quint
than his avatar would normally allow, Prime 3 allows him to take it from a
node without meditating, and Prime 4 allows him to take it from anything at
all, though Tass is the best form.
