In my downtime post, John Black/Carthephius is heading
off to the Orient to meet with an old ally. They
journey's going to take an hour. How the hell can he
do that?

With Spikey's help I created a spell called The King's
Highway for use during downtime and to add a little
flavor to my character's story. The spell is detailed
below as an explanation.

Spell: The King's Highway
Level 3 Amulets
Ritual
18 Sekhem

Description:

The King's Highway allows a Reborn a quick and mostly
safe method of travelling anywhere in the world within
a few hours. Using an amulet, the magician speaks the
necessary hekau while standing before a mirror. The
mirror becomes a portal allowing entrance on to the
King's Highway. The roads location is much debated,
but most magicians use the metaphor "on the other side
of the rain" to describe where it is. Whether it winds
through Duat or the Higher Umbra is unknown, although
those Mummies of the Wu T'ian speak of Dragon paths
that seem to bare some resemblance to the Road.

The appearance of the highway varies with each user,
and will be affected by path rating. The higher the
rating in the Path of Morality (Balance or Humanity),
the more friendly the atmosphere, while the lower the
rating the more ominous. Possible negative effects
include increased danger, longer travel times, as well
as a much less pleasant experience for any mortals
unfortunate enough to be travelling with the Mummy.

Rumours claim it is possible to take the King's
Highway beyond Earth into heaven, hell, Fairie, and
worlds beyond. Stories abound of the Raven King
negotiating treaties with Umbrood and Fallen, using
the highway to accomplish his goals. Whether this is
true or not is hard to say, but on occasion the
handful of Reborn and mortal magicians familiar with
the spell will comment on the strangers seen off in
the distance using the road.

Mechanics:

Opening the portal requires a simple Amulets + Occult
roll to enter. The more Successes, the more the time
and distance are reduced. Leaving is as simple as
finding one's destination. The magician focuses on a
location and then rolls Survival + Intelligence to
determine success. Once a destination is reached, the
magician can view the outside world through the mirror
or reflective surface and determine if he wishes to
exit or move on to a new location.

Anyone viewing a magician entering or leaving the
highway will see the individual walking in the mirror,
growing either larger or smaller as they do so,
depending on whether they're coming or going.
