John sighed.  "I trust that you're able to take care
of yourself.  I'm not going to stand here and warn you
to stay away from them, or that they're dangerous, or
anything else that would be condescending."

He turned and looked at her.  "I hope you will let me
say that if anything did happen to you, . . ." he left
the rest unsaid, and he seemed to lean forward as if
to kiss her. Just as he was nearing the point of no
return, a playful smile came to his lips and he turned
his attention back to the party.
