>Christine looks at Jack, pale, sweating, sick. "Or
something, like that anyway," she mutters. She sinks
to one knee close by the pallet bed he lays on. His
skin >glistens waxily with fever and Christine is
suddenly >unreasonably angry, railing at her own
helpless futility.  She grabs his clammy hand and
holds on >tight. She opens a channel in her mind, a
familiar >route, the same thread that connected them
before, 
>outside.

As Christine squeezes his bandaged hand, Jack winces,
and the mage feels a warm dampness pressing against
her fingers. The wound on the back of his hand has
begun to bleed anew.

>Stay sharp, Jack, thinks Christine, a blaze of temper
- of will - behind her eyes. 
>Destiny don't care what happens to you? Well, *fuck*
that shit because *I* do.

The intensity of her emotions acts as a well-timed
slap in the face.  

"Oh, man..." Christine hears Jack's reply in her head,
softer, more distant than the last time they
connected, but it's clear that this mental
conversation is infinitely easier for him than a
verbal one. "And I was...just about ready...to call it
a night."

She can almost sense him smiling.

"'S'okay...they're afraid of me...s'okay. They're
not... stupid." Another flash of pain floods through
Jack and is transformed into a violent white flash of
light in his mind - a sudden pulse that he
inadvertently shares with Christine. "Shit...sorry. 
Sorry."

"Look...don't count on them to help. They won't mess
with... things like me. Too dark...and this flesh is
too...foreign. It isn't... really me. And they...know
it."

Jack manages to squeeze Christine's hand. It's only a
hint of pressure, but it's there.

"Please don't...be afraid of me."
