The Harlequin, Maurice
Ravnos , Serpent
Their own private piece of the bar at Club Harlequin

So, what he had suspected was the truth, the Harlequin had destroyed the
Izcoatl's trinket. He again wondered at the power that must lurk behind
this unassuming exterior. Unassuming of you think about a portrayal of
power at least, otherwise, the Harlequin was anything but unassuming.
"Sso, it iss ass I ssought. When Panic wouldn't come up wiss sse one 'oo
desstroyed sse trinket I ssusspected it 'ad been you." He made a pause
considering the Harlequin's words. "For sse ssake of argument, I am not
sure it'ss doing what it wass ssupossed to, becausse ssiss ssing brought
ssomessing into being ssat wassn't ssupossed to be. Mainly, a
concentration of countlesss ssoulss. What 'appened to ssem when sse
trinket got desstroyed? Were ssey obliterated? Were ssey freed?
Whatever, I don't ssink ssey are doing what ssey are ssuppossed to do,
becausse ssey should never been 'ere in sse firsst place."

He raised one hand, a gesture showing that he didn't mean this as an
attack on the Harlequin's deeds or belief, but as a thought to be kept
in mind.

The Harlequin had been unaware of any of this and it gave him pause. So little did these days and the thought of all those souls in .. Limbo? Prevented from moving on to the next incarnation. It seemed wrong. On the other hand, the truly dead share the piss out of him like they did any smart Rom and he didn't want to have to get involved if he could avoid it. Maybe he should talk to somebody who didn't mind the dead.

'Never explain, never appologise,' he thought 'but perhaps sometimes see a job through till the end!'

"Ass for sse Isscoatl, ass you were frank wiss me about sse desstruction
of sse trinket and your reasson for desstroying it, I will be frank wiss
you." He leaned back on the stool and his hand rested on the pommel of
his cane, which he had laid on the bar. Unconsciously stroking the
serpents coiling around themselves, making up the pommel. "Ssiss
universse, ass it iss pressenting itsself iss a lie. Perpetrated by
beingss of immensse sspiritual power, 'oo can't bear ssomeone elsse
rissing to sseir ssatuss. Sso ssey calcified reality chaining everyone
to sse world where ssey can reign ssupreme, denying everyone elsse to
risse above sseir sstation. Ssey call ssemsselvess godss and demonss.
One chaining uss in golden chainss, sse osserss chaining uss in chainss
of iron. We call ssem sse Aeonss and mosst osserss in ssiss cossmic game
are sseir unwitting sservantss and sslavess. We want to desstroy ssiss
order, we want for anyone to attain sseir freedom, sseir full
potential." He stopped. Then smiled. "'oping ssat we would attain it
firsst, of coursse."

His attention was back on the conversation now. He could not believe what he was hearing. Was this Setite really so enlightened? He seemed to be echoing the truths only known by those on the Path of paradox. Did all the Children of Set thinklike this he wondered?

"Sse loass are beingss 'elping uss in ssiss sstruggle. Ssey are our
alliess, being rebelss againsst sse Aeonss order. We 'ave opened our
eyess to sse truss, cassting away sse chainss ssat 'ave been clossed
around our neckss. If ssomeone 'oo 'ad accomplished ssiss, iss taking a
new chain and binding 'imsself back to sse Aeonss yoke, 'e iss beneass
any conssideration for lenienssy. If you are blind, you can be 'elped to
ssee, but if you 'ave sseen and ssen choosse blindnesss again, you are
sse lowesst form ssat anyone could attain in ssiss reality."

The Harlequin nodded, listening intently.

He paused after this speech, then added: "I didn't belief ssiss mysself
for a long time. I 'eard sse sstory and accepted sse myss, but my faiss
wassn't be'ind it." His eyes grew distant. "But *I* ssaw sse loass wiss
my own eyess. I made a journey and ssey appeared before me. I cannot
deny sse truss any longer. I came back from ssere changed." He stopped
speaking, his mind seemingly somewhere else.

Before he answered, the Harlequin peered over his shoulder at the new arrival, or perhaps to his wife at the bar behind them, and then turned back to Maurice.

"I had no idea members of the other Clans were capable of understanding this!" he said genuinely. seeming to miss the slight he had inadvertantly given. "We Ravnos had always known of this world of lies, we have many names for it like Maya and Bujo. That the world was once a place of freedom and beauty and fluid possibility until the Shimulo bound it in chains. Those of us who have been granted enlightenment consider ourselves to be the last hope for creation. Rebels with the power to destroy the prison."

he stops, an expression of concern comes over his face as he wonders if he has said too much. He knew he had a big moutha nd a loose tongue as well as he knew the Setites ability to sweet talk others. But Maurice had realy sounded like he was speaking from the heart, as unbeating as it might be.

"You ought to talk to Columbine sometime. Perhaps we have more in common that we realised?"
