Bill, I would suggest talking to the ST first. Explaining that you don't want to go behind the players back but are not happy with confronting him for the very reasons you give. Maybe even play on it and pretend to be a little shyer than you are. But simply express your wish to solve it and ask for his insight intot he player first. maybe he will be able to give some advice that lets you sidestep the internet communication problem and to smooth the way. Express the fact you are not looking to dith the character, just find a way to open dialouge and see what he suggets. Then you may find you have a better opening to approach the player.
Its a crap job smoothing over player to player ruffles (I really hate it) but it is one of the responsibilities the Storyteller takes on. Give him (or her) as much support as you can while asking for a sol;ution and you should at least know what to do next.
If it turns out they are an arsehole, you are perfectly justified in asking the ST to seperate you so you can enjoy the game.

Greetings all,
I hope people won't mind if I steal away to a quiet
corner of the game and ask a question
out-of-character. I find myself in a RP situation and
am not sure quite how to handle it.
In one of the other PBEM games I'm in (NOT SODIUM
NOIR), the ST has partnered me up with another
character to investigate a mystery. The details of
the plot are unimportant.
The game is very new and the reason the ST put us
together was to start some inter-character dialogue,
interaction, bonding, etc. The problem is, the
character I'm partnered with is an asshole.
This is not a case of a character that is suppose to
be an asshole, and I'm taking offense. I doubt that
this is the intention of the player, but I really hate
his character.
For example:
The overall game setting is one of distrust.
Characters are suppose to find a way to overcome their
paranoia, work together, and save the world. I
introduced myself to Tony (not the actual name)
offering where I'm from, my pride, and a brief generic
background. It's nothing really useful, just a way to
get things started.
His response is that knowledge is power and he doesn't
feel comfortable offering anything else besides his
name. Conversation ends.
Ever since then, Tony has not picked up any hooks I've
offered to get things started or some sort of
relationship to develop and he's offered none himself.
His character is condescending, and in addition to
making it difficult for me to suspend disbelief and RP
that I can work with this guy, it's almost impossible
for me to post anything.
I have no idea what the player is really like. I am
not accusing him of being an asshole, just his
character. Right now I'm pondering my options. I've
come up with two:
1. Talk to the player directly. Problem is, how can
I express myself without making it sound like a
personal attack, an easy mistake to make using e-mail.
LEt's face it, creating a character ina game can be
very personal, and people can become a little touchy
at criticism.
2. Talk to the ST. Problem is, if our roles were
reverse I'd go ballistic. I have no problem working
with other players to try and solve problems, but if
someone complained to the ST about me without talking
to me first it would not go over well.
That's the situation. I'm hoping that with so many
experienced role-players in this game someone might
have some thoughts or insight for me.
