She looks back at him, away from the happy people.
"John frowned. "If someone is hunting you, it wouldn't be the mortal authorities. Whoever or whatever has interests in that school would have to have a lot of pull to manage covering something like that up. If you're interested, I have a good friend who's a former cop and a private eye. He's very good at what he does. Would you be interested in an introduction?"
"I would like that; both to know whether I've killed without cause and to find out maybe what it is that hunts me."
She looks down and reaches to his hand on the table, just shy of touching.
"You don't fear or despise me for this?"
John offered a reassuring smile. "It is not my place to judge you, to condem you for what happened or to forgive you for things beyond your control. I can say that nothing has changed in the last few moments since you told me what happened."
He took a drink of wine before he continued. "Abby, I want you to understand exactly who and what I am. It may help you to understand why I will not judge you for the events at the school. At one point in my life, I made my way north and fell in with a group of raiders who made it a habit of terrorizing the coast of Europe. I joined them on one raid, and while looting the village, I came across a woman defending her children. She had taken up her dead husbands axe and managed to kill two of my companions before she met me."
"This was something women did not do, but she impressed me with her skill, determination, and luck. I honored her with a warriors death, taking her head from her neck in one swipe. The children were left behind, unharmed, to try and survive on their own."
"By today's standards, I would be considered a monster, but at the time, it was a great honor I gave her. I am a civilized man, but the term civilized has changed and evolved over the years. Actions which today are considered the henious actions of a sociopath were rightous."
"You're a good person. I have no doubt about that. You need never worry about me judging you for your past."
