Mage, Bastet
The Kings Road, Paris at Breakfast
The trip took about an hour. The journey on the King's Highway had been surreal. A long road made of brick that cut its way through a country side that looked familiar but felt alien. Everything seemed more alive and more real. The sky was a deep blue, the grass on either side a luch green, and the birds were of every conceivable color.
Abby looks about, fascinated by the sights, sounds and scents.
All the birds, so...pretty... She had always rather liked birds. Since the Change, she Adored them...
John explained that he didn't know where the road came from, or who built it, but he first became aware of it's existence around 1500. "It will take a traveller anywhere in the world. If one were to find the right path, it might take you beyond, into the realms of angels and demons, fairies and unknown."
Now they were in Paris, sitting outisde, enjoying some wine and the view of the Eiffle Tower. "What do you think?
"Mmmmmmm wine with Breakfast...." Her eyes are alight as she watches the people, savoring the life around them...
John smiled as he took a drink himself. "I'm glad you like. We can come back some time if you'd like to go shopping. It's always fun to say you went to Paris for the day to pick up a dress, even if the mode of travel is unconventional."
He put his glass down and refilled in from a nearby bottle, the reamins of breakfast on the plate before him. "I hope you don't mind my asking, but I suspect there's a significant part of your life you're not telling me. If you'd rather I not pry, I have no problem. We're all entitled to our secrets. I have mine and I'm sure you have yours . . ."
"Givin' away secrets got my People in Big Trouble once. John Black. Really Big Trouble. So I'll not be tellin' Secrets that concern all of us as I'm sure you'll understand."
The Bastet takes a deep drink as she thinks.
"For me at least, I'd no clue what I was till I was 14. My folks had passed away and I lived with Relatives.
Good folk but narrow-minded. I was a real Rebel, likin; all the things they didn't. Music, Art, of the kind they thouht to be a bad influence. They even hated the way I talked...Dad was proud to be Irish-American. They wanted to be assimilatin'."
Another deep drink...Damn it hurts to be thinkin' of this, I miss Da.
"Anyway to be makin' a long story short they shipped me off to a School where they thought they'd whip me into shape. The Sisters there really meant well, I guess. The other Girls, they were kids o' Priviledge and Power. Rich Kids. They despised me for the same reasons. And I despised them back for it.
One Day they cornered me, we pushed each other over the brink and there was a big fight."
Her gaze lifts and stares into his.
"My People shift for the first time at purberty, you know. Add all that stress from the Changes Humans go through to desire of the Cat to be gettin' out, and you gotta Bomb that walks and talks and fights. There were eight of them and I was losin', gettin the crap beat out of me. Then the Cat came out. A Big Cat. Not the human lookin one you saw last night. This is the one that Mankind recalls deep in their genes. The long toothed terror that hunted their ancestors in the Hills, Caves, Forests, and Plains."
Her voice is bleak and cold.
"They remember that time in their bones. And faced with that nightmare become real they panic. And the Cat, she does not like bein' trapped either, not in a tiny wet place full of screamin' Apes."
Her voice broke, she drains the glass.
"Sorry, no offence taken I hope. Thats just how they seemed to me then. I was terrified, half mad with fear of what was happening and furious to get out.
I did.
I left them behind, livin' or dead, I'm not sure. They were hateful to me, but I'd never have wished Death on them, not in my blackest moments."
She looks away, at the Sun and all the happy folks walkin' by, enjoying their morning.
Seein' her paw prints bloody in the snow as she ran.
Black under the Moon.
