>"What is it?" she asks. "Mara?" Christine has never seen Mara like  
this. "Mara . . ." Panic threads through Christine's voice and she  
touches Mara's  cold hand lightly - even in her concern, experience  
has taught her to be very careful about touching her vampire lover in  
any incidental way.

Mara pulls her hand away out of instinct, but she looks at Christine, her face still contorted by pain.  She is glad, though, that Christine had come to her aid.  Her voice is a whisper through clenched teeth.  "I...can't go in there." A statement of fact, not fear.

>"What's going on?" she whispers, mostly to herself then her worried  
attention returns to Mara. "Look, you're not okay . . . what can I do?"

"Must move back."  She mutters mostly to herself, but Christine can still hear her.  She catches hold of Christine's arm to steady herself, then starts to take a few shuffling steps backward.  Already, the sound of the bells is beginning to lessen.  Her next steps are tentative, but more steady, as she actually lifts her feet from the ground.  The vise-like grip of the pain was starting to recede, confirmation that something...or maybe someone...was making it impossible for her to enter the temple.  

She remembers a snatch of a movie and as her body begins to relax she says it.  "You have to have faith for that to work."  Surely, then, this was a bit of Faith at work.  The temple, while not a Christian holy place, was a holy place nonetheless.  

Mara continues to move away from the temple, so that now that only the uneasiness remained.  But was it the temple's doing, or just that she was here in Chinatown, overdressed and inadequately armed?

Mara looks at Christine again, her expression more relieved than relaxed.  She manages to force a smile to her lips.  She knew now that Christine wasn't going to ditch her.  "Go on and change....just...hurry back?"
