"I'm attending a small gathering myself and I need an escort for the evening.  Lady Sinclair's party could be the social event of the season, and I'd like to make a good impression.  But if you're busy, maybe I can find someone else."  Mara twirls a lock of hair in her fingers as she waits for his answer.  He probably had been invited as well.
