There was something about a dead gangster and
conversations in dead languages and... Tess was
thoroughly lost now. Normally, she felt comfortable in
the presence of other strong females, but these women
were far different than those she was used to
associating with. Columbine's intensity was
particularly intimidating, though the madam wasn't
about to betray her uneasiness. She leaned back,
feigning a relaxed air, and hoped the conversation
would, at some point, swerve back to something more
familiar.

Michael looked up from where he'd been staring into his drink, distracted by
ephemera, "I'm sorry." He smiled with sad eyes at Tess as well as the others
at the table, "It's an interesting night, isn't it?"
