> "Melcom like to maintain their links to bloodlines!" Christophe
replied thoughtfully. "The sins of the Father .."
".. afflict unto the seventh generation!" Zoë finished for him.
"or several, depending on which version you read. But Melcom
have always played the long game. It wouldn't surprise me if
they had their hooks in your family even longer than you
real;ise Mara, under a different name and through different
means."
Mara nods at the Biblical reference. Having spent some time digging through the family archives, she did have some idea. The Rothchilds were bankers in Germany, practically royal, and they had risen to a position of power quite quickly. Perhaps too quickly.
>"But the past is done, it cannot be changed. The future can be." Christophe's tone had become less jovial as he spoke. He takes a seat properly and leans forward a little. "Getting yourself embraced will have really messed with their schemes, which is always good, but after all the work they've put into you Mara, they won't just give up. Even if you hadn't chosen to
fight Melcom, you'd have been enmeshed in their schemes anyway. Kinda lucky for you then that you found us!"
"I planned to be Embraced about as much as I planned to work for Melcom." There is an underlying note of bitterness in her tone. Then again, a good Bible scholar would know that her first name meant bitter. She smiles at the pair. Luck had nothing to do with her finding them. They had found her. Brought her here.
>"Luck has no quantifiable measure brother! The patterns of
coincidence may be hidden from view, but they still exist.
Considering how long you spent whoring and gambling with our
Sganzy I thought you might have learnt that." She turns to
Mara, her face as ever as stern as a classical sculpture. "You
clashed with the Mayor recently Mara, over a church. Tell me a
little of that."
Mara looks at both of them, and folds her arms. "Well, the City is undertaking a harassment campaign against St. Bridget's in Cardboard City. Various and sundry small annoyances in hopes of keeping it from operating as a shelter and ministering to their parishoners. I filed a cease and desist order against the City. The Mayor, of course, tries to downplay it, calling me an opportunist. If it doesn't stop, then I will escalate the battle."
She ponders a moment. "I do not make it a point to turn away from a righteous cause, even when puppies frequent it." She wonders if they would catch the vulgar reference to the Werewolves, but if they give her a blank look, she would offer the proper term to them.
"So, I would like to thank you for the polite Summons." She leaves out the fact that they could probably have just as easily given her an impolite one. "And did you like the flowers, Zoe?"
