>"Allow me ma'am" he says, taking Hope's lead and picking the kid up in his huge arms. Without any effort he shoulders the load and gives Hope the chance to examine him as they walked. 

Hope watches the guy carry him like he was nothing.  Damn, she didn't want to get on his bad side.  Not ever.  She studies the boy as they start to head inside.  

The boy seemed badly beaten, a real mess, but he could have fared much worse she felt. >

>"They will do eventually, if we report it. Much as they'd like to ignore this part of the city, I still have a few friends in the department." 

Hope nods.  The bouncer had more friends in the force than she did.   

He carries Toby back into the bar. "But first I think we ought to see if this fellow wants to involve the police. Sometimes even the good ones only add to the problem without meaning to. And the bad ones ..." He doesn't finish the sentence. 

"I have a hunch he doesn't.  Those guys were pros, sent to deliver a message.  Plus, Asians tend to fear the police and don't always report crimes."  

She follows him back into the bar to see Sue Lei at the bar, still guarding her purse.
