"Allow me ma'am" he says, taking Hope's lead and picking the kid up in his
huge arms. Without any effort he shoulders the load and gives Hope the
chance to examine him as they walked. The boy seemed badly beaten, a real
mess, but he could have fared much worse she felt.

Raindogs strictly off limits?"  Then again, based on the quality of the
beating that had been administered, the vic probably may have been familiar
with the guys and very likely, their employer.  Whoever that might be.
Maybe she could sneak in some computer time while she was on leave and
figure out who they did work for....

"They will do eventually, if we report it. Much as they'd like to ignore
this part of the city, I still have a few friends in the department." He
carries Toby back into the bar. "But first I think we ought to see if this
fellow wants to involve the police. Sometimes even the good ones only add to
the problem without meaning to. And the bad ones ..." He doesn't finish the
sentence.
