> Hope watches the thugs leave, having already committed their faces to her memory.  As a civilian, she was not under any restriction on pursuing them, but she could easily pick them out of a line up, and the vic was beat pretty bad.  

> She goes to check out the vic.  A small oriental man.  She bends over him, checking for a pulse.  Assessing the extent of his injuries.  She looks around.  When the hell was EMS going to get here?   

The beating had been administered by professionals. It had been meant as a message and the message had been, 'don't do it again'. Things could have been worse for the young man, barely out of his teens it seemed, they could have been sent to make sure he was incapable of doing it again. 

He'd live. he'd even walk again. But for a long time to come, he'd wince when he did so. Hope suspected he probably had a broken rib or two, maybe  a fractured arm, but no internal bleeding. His eyes were focussed.

"Y'think he can be moved?" Malone asked "he don't look so bad and the ambulance crew won't come into this alleyway anyhow."
