The sound of snoring and the warmth of bodies filled the Church as Tom moved up the aisle. Most of the pews and seats he;d sleeping bundles, rags and second hand clothing under cheap donated blankets. Areas once the soul property of devoted Catholics looking for a cheap pass through the pearly gates were now the only beds of the homeless. 

The alter however was still very much an alter. A place sanctified and dedicated to the One. A few voting candled flickered and spluttered to his left, perhaps lit by those among the destitute who still had something to hope for or somebody to remember. To his right a door with what might be a soft patina of light from somewhere shining through. 

Christine feels the warmth of the place as she enters, the warmth of human bodies and ancient underfloor heating systems. That at least was an improvement. No sign of Bellamy or the other two young men she'd seen on her visits here. perhaps they were all sleeping now the soup Kitchen had been packed away for the night.

Although she doubted it, Father Bellamy had the distinct look of somebody who almost never slept, although who might well doze in the vestry. For now it was just her, the well dressed man at the Alter with his unusual companion, and three dozen sleeping waifs and strays.
