The Scream that cuts through the air and jars his nerves comes from the far side of Gorham's large park. It sounds terrified and shocked. A handful of Bums and early morning shift workers begin to approach an area on the Parks edge. 

The scent of blood is the first thing, of course. So much blood that it's dark miasma is as forceful as a blow to the face. It seems to drip from every leaf, glisten darkly on each blade of grass and it spreads out in black slick across the path. Rolled in the grass nearby is  a tumbled shape in dark clothes - a hooded sweatshirt and jogging pants. The running shoes look expensive and the pale, outflung hand is well manicured. Closer to, the body in the grass is clearly a man's, fair haired and fair skinned, 30's well groomed, lying in rapidly congealing pool of his own blood. His throat has been slashed - an expert slice. The wounds to his face, however are vindictive and disturbing. He may once have been handsome. Now he is hamburger mince, his flesh slashed from his bones in gruesome ribbons.  


But it's clear that the victim didn't get much chance to scream. The scream probably came from the homeless guy kneeling by the bloody pool in which the corpse is marooned. Probably not a candidate for Mr Sane and Mr Sober at the best of times, the bum now weeps and gibbers noisily and rocks back and forth on his heels, staring at the murdered man in the park with crazed eyes. A collection of his fellow accomodationaly challenged friends comfort and sooth his shock. In his dirty, cracked-nailed hands, the derelict holds a rose, luminously white under the park street lamps, it's delicate outer petals stained red with blood.
