>Idly Sue Lei raises one hand at the departing Hope "You welcome" she says in reference to the purse, her voice distant as she looks down at Toby on the table in front of her.

Hope stops a moment.  She digs a pen out of her purse and writes her name and cell phone number on it.   She sets it by Sue, not really caring if she picks it up.  "Look, I'm sorry about your friend.  Give me a call later and maybe we can talk more then.  Lunch maybe?  I should be free."  And probably for a very long while, if the Rat Squad has its way.  A trip to Chicago to visit her family would be nice.  And it would do her some good.  Too bad she wasn't allowed to leave town.

Hope walks out the door, and the cold air hits her all at once, cutting through the thin blouse.   She felt a little more awake now.  Maybe she could make the drive back to her apartment after all.   She looks up to the sky and closes her eyes, letting the rain fall upon her face and dampen her hair.   

The rain was better in Chicago, she muses.  It made the air smell fresh and clean and new again.  Here, it was like the rain passed through a cloud of pollution on its way down.  The rain...or the liquid pretending to be it, felt almost oily and though it didn't seem to have a scent of its own, it seemed to dilute the other scents in the air, be it for good or ill.   

Hope gets in her car and starts to drive.  Her knuckles are white as she grips the steering wheel, and despite the rain, she opens her window, relying on the cold air to keep her awake.   Her challenge, her focus, was the stripes on the road, staying perfectly in the center of her lane.

The trip takes longer than it really should, but it's better to arrive later than not to arrive at all.
